One of the movie which came to an halt due to the terrific environment we are living in now is a Malayalam movie kappela directed by MD. Mustafa. This is the very first attempt of mustafa in directing a movie. The debuting director is also a actor in malayalam cinema for quite sometime now. Kappela is a thriller film starring Anna Ben, Roshan Matthews and sreenath bhasi in leading roles. Kappela's story revolve around Jessy played by Anna Ben, a simple girl living with her family in countryside. Jessy's family is poor and rely on farming and tailoring work for their daily expenses. Connect with a auto-rickshaw driver Vishnu played by Roshan Matthews. Make them fall for each other. Due to the things happening in Jessy's life, she decides she want to meet Vishnu in person where they encounter a stranger i.e Roy played by sreenath bhasi. Then what happens in the story is the ultimate premise of the film.
Jessy a small town girl living with her family, helps her mother in tailoring work to earn for living. One day her mother asks her to dial a customer's number. She accidentally calls a wrong number which is picked up by vishnu, a auto-rickshaw driver. Thus begin a new friendship which blossoms into love.
At the same time benny, an owner of a textile shop put forward a proposal to marry Jessy in front of Jessy's parents, and they accept it without even asking Jessy if she want to marry benny or not. This leads to developing a sully feeling in the mind of Jessy. At this point she just want to meet Vishnu in person to get clear idea about her and Vishnu's relationship. So she heads to Kozhikode to meet Vishnu. But there they encounter a stranger Roy and had to change plans.
The major highlight of kappela is Roy played by sreenath bhasi, the actor put forward a terrific performance. His mere presence on the screen gives horrific experience to the film. Roy is a desperate graduate who will do anything to earn money. He is short tempered, terrifying and unpredictable. Sreenath bhasi played the role of Roy brilliantly.
Anna Ben in the role of small town girl makes you feel empathize towards her. Various things she go through makes you feel bad for her. Roshan Matthews performed a auto-rickshaw driver commendably. Performances of actors in the film makes you feel you are actually a part of this and watching this from some character's point of view.
The screenplay and editing of the film is brilliant. The music, the subtle songs are truly splendid. How the film deal with various aspects of story that are love, thrill, pain must be appreciated.
Some peoples might feel the movie is slow paced..but for me the pace was right. Really loved the chemistry between Jessy and Vishnu. For the decades now we're watching love blossoming through stalking in Indian cinema. Whereas kappela uses a simple riddle to start a love story. In the runtime you feel that you actually know the characters and their morals and that's where the film take you to next level, the twists you cannot even imagine. For some of the time I felt like this is just like some other Bollywood love story, but what happened further in the story totally blowed me away.
The film throws light on many social issues. Mainly the sex trafficking, one of the most serious issue young girls and women experiencing since time immemorial. The other issue like gender discrimination, also the countryside where Jessy lives is extremely conservative. The irony has been put forward in the movie that how beautiful the greenery and countryside looks but when it comes to the lives of the individuas who lives there, they don't mirror the same fate. A place where men drinks and wanders freely, while the women are hesitant for laughing.
Final thoughts- kappela is a well crefted, well acted film, which put forward a compelling story in brilliant way.
Filmanion rating- 7.7/10
